| Introducing Innovation, by Nigel Howells, head of competitiveness at the South West RDA |

With the economy showing its first signs of recovery, this is a crucial time for many companies. It is important that businesses take a fresh look at their operations, seek out alternative markets and most importantly, embrace innovation. Many will be looking to make the most of the changing economic |
climate and by looking at new technologies or training schemes; businesses in the South West could become more productive and profitable.
The region already performs well against a number of innovation measures; it has a higher than average investment in R&D and generates significant numbers of high tech patent applications in a number of sectors. |
|
However, there is significant scope to improve the innovative capacity of the region. Interventions funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) programmes, will be working to support and drive this, helping the South West to become a key player in the global economy.
The ERDF and ESF programmes have already invested in several new multimillion pound projects to help drive innovation in the region, including business support for manufacturers via the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW) and harnessing power from the sea as part of the PRIMaRE project, the ESF Survival Toolkit and Innovation and Transnationality programmes which you can read about further down in this newsletter. |
